Agonistic pucker

A vertical retraction of the lips, with or without baring of the front teeth.
(Fox, 1971; Goodmann et al., 2002; Koler-Matznick et al., 2005)

This Siberian Husky mix is exhibiting an agonistic pucker: her lips are retracted vertically (the commissures are pushed forward) and the canines and incisors are visible.

The Airedale puppy is walking in front of the female German Shepherd cross; the adult female reacts by staring and exhibiting an agonistic pucker. The puppy averts her gaze, turning her head.

The mixed breed female trots toward the male Golden Retriever (who is sitting) and stretches her muzzle forward for olfactory exploration at a distance, then stiffens, moves away and closes her eyes. The Golden Retriever leaps forward with paws wide open; the female swerves to the side, then re-orients in a frontal stance with a back-off posture, exhibiting an agonistic pucker. When the male exhibits a rear approach, the female lowers her tail, then moves away. When the male follows her, she stops, glances at him and flicks her tongue; the male licks his nose and orients toward her head, maintaining a lateral stance. The female reacts with an offensive facial display and an agonistic pucker, and the male averts his gaze.

The male Border Collie lies down following a cue from his owner. Several Pyrenees Mountain Dog puppies approach. The Border Collie reacts by exhibiting an agonistic pucker and offensive facial display. One of the puppies reacts by lying down and avoiding eye contact, wagging his tail and then moving away. Another puppy moves away, while the last puppy avoids eye contact, circles around the Border Collie and then approaches him. The Border Collie responds with an intense agonistic pucker and flicks his tongue.
