Interposing between two other dogs

Complex behaviour. During an interaction between two dogs, a third individual interposes himself between them. The third dog may continue along its path, or stop between the two dogs and interact with them.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier bitch exhibits an offensive facial display, interposing herself in a lateral stance between the female Tervueren cross and the male Border Collie. The Staffordshire and the Border Collie belong to the same family group.

The male Belgian Malinois interposes himself between the young male Labrador Retriever and the Swiss White Shepherd bitch. The Labrador reacts with a bow with front legs wide open, in a frontal stance.

The tan Australian Shepherd cross displaces the male smooth-coated Border Collie, then shows elements of a frontal attack and riding up. The Border Collie rears up, stops in a lateral stance and looks toward the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who is part of his family group. The female mixed breed displays a bow with front legs wide open, the male leaves the interaction as the Staffordshire interposes herself between the other two dogs at a gallop. The mixed-breed glances at the Staffordshire, then returns to her owner.

The young Labrador cross approaches the female German Shepherd. During this approach he orients his gaze repeatedly towards the male German Shepherd. The German Shepherd bitch attacks the Labrador cross, who swerves to the side several times, then stops in a lateral stance. The female displays a frontal attack, and the Lab cross backs away, maintaining eye contact with the male German Shepherd who is approaching. The male Shepherd moves closer and interposes himself between the two dogs, moving into a lateral stance and orienting his gaze first toward the Shepherd bitch, and then toward the male. The Lab cross leaves the interaction with tail down, ears flattened back and flicking tongue.
