Marking over
During an interaction with another dog, the dog intentionally marks near or over the urine of his opponent; the behaviour may be followed by an eliminative paw scrape.

When Daniele took this photo, he wondered if he would ever be able to publish it... and here it is ! The mixed-breed bitch has gone off to a quiet spot to defecate, attracting the attention of three adult females- two Australian Shepherds and an Airedale.

In this interaction between two males, the young Staffordshire Bull Terrier urinates on the ground, in a squatting posture; the German Shepherd sniffs the urine and marks over with raised hind leg. The Shepherd stares directly at the Staffordshire, who then re-orients frontally and approaches.

The black and white mixed breed bitch sniffs the ground and glances at the approaching male smooth-coated Border Collie. She then marks with raised hind leg, then re-orients toward the male and displays an eliminative paw scrape. The male sniffs, retracting his flews in a display similar to the Flehmen Response lip curl seen in other mammals, then marks over and exhibits an eliminative paw scrape without re-orienting.

The grey mixed-breed bitch with blue eyes marks with urine; the male German Shepherd cross approaches from behind. The male sniffs the ground while the female exhibits genital olfactory exploration. When the male raises his head and looks at her, the female backs away with head up and exhibits an eliminative paw scrape. The male marks over and leaves the interaction, while the bitch sniffs and marks over.

The Golden Retriever bitch marks with urine and exhibits an eliminative paw scrape; the mixed-breed bitch with blue eyes marks over, while the Golden Retriever returns and looks at her. The mixed-breed bitch displaces the Golden Retriever and exhibits olfactory exploration of the Border Collie bitch, who turns around and displaces both the Golden Retriever and the mixed breed. The Border Collie bitch moves a few steps away, then rolls over, forcing the mixed breed bitch to move away, then glancing at her. The mixed breed marks over the Golden Retriever's mark, and moves nearer to the point where the Border Collie had rolled; returning back, she slows and lowers her head when she encounters the Border Collie.
