Attempting to flee

The dog tries to increase the distance between itself and a stimulus by moving forward or backward. The attempt to flee is made impossible by the fact that the dog is on leash.

VIDEO

large screen
This video was filmed during a behavioural evaluation. When the evaluator begins to climb the stairs, the dog stops and refuses to follow him. The Pit Bull swallows and licks her flews; her tail is down and wagging. When the man comes back down the stairs, the dog tries to move away, licks her flews and balks again. The dog moves to the side and attempts to flee. She licks her flews and when the man lowers his posture, the the dog moves closer. The evaluator tries to reassure her, and the dog first attempts to flee, then follows him. She shows her uncertainty, backing away and raising her head to resist the pressure on her leash. The evaluator doesn't pull on the leash; instead he speaks to the dog, then waits for her to decide to climb up the stairs on her own initiative.
