Tail between the legs
The dog's tail is held low between its hind legs, and
may be held so tightly as to be folded / flattened
against the dog's abdomen.
(Fox, 1971; Murphy, 1998;
Goodmann, 2002; Koler-Matznick, 2005)

In reaction to the insistent approach of
a male Pointer mix, the female Australian Kelpie has
shifted her weight backward, and is staring at him, her
tail between her legs. She is exhibiting piloerection
only at the base of her tail.

This black mixed breed female has
reacted to the approach of other dogs with an agonistic
pucker, flicking her tongue and displaying piloerection
along her entire spinal column, tail between her legs.

This female Segugio Italiano mix has
sought support from her owner: her forequarters are
lowered. Her tail is between her legs.

In this clip, the German Shepherd is a 3 year old male,
while the Airedale Terrier is a 9 month old female. The
Shepherd approaches the Airedale, who has her
tail between her legs , ears bent back. When
the German Shepherd sniffs her head, the Airedale turns
her head and runs away with her tail
between her legs. The German Shepherd chases
her, and she turns to face off with him, shifting into a
frontal stance with head raised, hindquarters lowered
and one foreleg lifted. When the Shepherd takes a step
closer, the Airedale threatens a jaw punch and leaves.

This female Labrador has encountered a group of
unfamiliar dogs. She licks her nose, and moves away with
her forelegs lowered and displaying piloerection. She is
chased by the female dogs in the group, and blocked by
the Jack Russel. She stops and then moves away with head
down, her tail between her
legs. The Jack Russel follows her and exhibits
anal-genital olfactory exploration; the Labrador walks
with a crouching posture, and seeks support from her
owner. She sits, licks her nose, and seeks refuge behind
her owner. She licks her nose, then runs away, chased by
the Jack Russel.
