Barking
A short barking sound which may be directed at an
object or another individual.
(Eisfeld, 1966; Fox, 1971;
Lund, 1999; van den Berg et al., 2003)

The young female Appenzeller is barking
at the male German Shepherd whose head can be seen in
the foreground of the photo (in the bottom left corner).
Her head is lowered, ears back. In barking, the lips
have not been pulled back to show the top teeth. The
female American Akita has closed her eyes and is
ignoring the German Shepherd.

This male Australian Shepherd is barking
at another dog. The whites of his eyes are visible; his
eyes appear round and the dog's expression is fearful.

This female Irish setter in displaying a bow as the
mixed breed male approaches. She then freezes in a
frontal stance and stares at him; when the male begins
anal-genital olfactory exploration, she lowers her tail
and stands up. When the male moves away, looking for
support from his owner, the setter follows him, then
stops when the male orients toward her, then exhibits a
bow and leaps forward and barks.
The two dogs separate, but after a few seconds the
Setter moves back towards the male and barks.
She then displays a bow from a distance and barks,
when the two male Australian Shepherds approach her, she
looks at them, moves away and again exhibits bowing and
barks.
