Scratching

During an encounter a dog uses a paw to scratch itself while sitting, standing or lying down; alternatively, it exhibits scratching motions in the air.

The female Airedale Terrier puppy approaches the female Labrador, sniffs her and then displays greeting behaviours. The young male sniffs the puppy, who then turns her head, freezing, and staring at him. The Labrador scratches herself. The puppy sniffs the Labrador's flank, glances at the male and then turns her head away with abruptly. The puppy shifts into a lateral stance in front of the Labrador, and exhibits active submission.

The female Rottweiler x Labrador cross is in the training field when a male German Shepherd is brought onto the field and looks at her as he approaches. She sniffs the ground and ignores him. The two dogs remain at a distance of about two meters apart. The German Shepherd orients toward the female with his tail down, then lowers his head. When the female sits and begins to scratch herself, the German Shepherd sniffs the air.
