Lifting front paw
The dog raises a front paw, wrist bent.
(Beerda, 1998; van den Berg,

The young Border Collie has approached a
mixed breed male, who responds by standing tall and
staring at him. The Border Collie stops, shifting his
weight back, and lowers his head, tail between his legs,
and lifts a front paw.

The Segugio Italiano mix has lifted a
front paw in reaction to the approach of an unfamiliar
dog. Its tail is lowered.

The female mixed breed has lifted a
front paw during an interaction with a male Terrier mix.
Her tail is lowered, ears turned sideways and back, and
she is exhibiting piloerection (hackles raised) on her
neck and withers. The male is in a lateral stance and is
exhibiting courtship behaviours.

The Border Collie is standing still next to his owner
when the Malamute bitch approaches him. The male
stiffens, holding head raised, tail lowered, and
displays hackles raised and a paw
lifted. The Malamute licks her muzzle and wags
her tail as a female Golden retriever approaches; the
Border Collie turns his head to look at her and licks
his nose. The Golden Retriever and the Malamute display
an olfactory check, and when the male turns to look at
her, the Golden Retriever runs away playfully. She then
returns, while the Malamute directs her attention
towards a person present. The male Border and the
Malamute bitch circle and sniff each other, and the two
female dogs leave.

In this interaction between two females, the young sable
mixed breed meets an unfamiliar adult. The ears of the
younger dog are pinned back, head pulled back between
her shoulders, tail lowered and hackles raised on her
neck and withers. The grey adult sniffs and then
displaces her, but when the older dog attempts
ano-genital olfactory exploration the sable mixed breed
moves away and lifts a front
paw, re-orienting in a frontal stance. She then
closes her eyes, leaves and seeks support from her
owner, but is followed by the grey mixed breed. When the
black and white mixed breed female nears her, the sable
dog lowers her head, tail between her legs, and, walking
slowly, seeks support behind her owner. When the sable
mixed breed finds herself in front of the black and
white female, she lifts a
front paw, bends back her ears and looks toward
the exit, before seeking support from her owner.

This male Belgian Malinois was filmed during a Utility
Dog trial. In retrieving over the hurdle jump, upon
landing the dog lowers his head and tail, showing the
whites of his eyes and sits in the front position with
ears back and front paw lifted,
exhibiting stiffness and tension.
